Family leave, disability accommodation, workers compensation and paid leave, at once.

A single absence frequently triggers several statutes at once, each with its own
notice, documentation and job protection rules.
Run them concurrently where permitted. Federal family leave generally runs
concurrently with paid time off if the policy says so, with workers
compensation leave, and with state family leave in many jurisdictions. Failing
to designate leave as family leave does not preserve the entitlement for later —
it extends it.
Accommodation continues after leave is exhausted. Disability law may require
additional leave, reduced schedules or reassignment. Automatic termination at
the end of a fixed period is the most litigated policy in this area.
Paid family and medical leave programs in a growing number of states have
their own eligibility, benefit and job protection rules, administered by the
state but requiring employer action.
Paid sick leave ordinances and statutes have short increments, broad
qualifying reasons and restrictions on documentation requests for short
absences.
Workers compensation runs alongside and does not displace the others.
Practical administration. A single intake process that assesses every
absence against all applicable statutes, a matrix by jurisdiction, and written
designation notices. Employers with a multi-state workforce cannot administer
this from one policy.
